New Curriculum choices for our family

This new school year has brought about some major changes for us. First I realized that what I had in curriculum just wasn’t working for us, or at least for English and for Math. As of right now, we have chosen Math Mammoth, but I am highly considering Math U See. We’ll see how Math Mammoth goes first. We haven’t purchased this one yet, she is having a sale around Thanksgiving weekend and I will buy it then.

Second, we were using First Language Lessons and Writing with Ease for the kids. I loved it, I can’t say a bad thing about it. It’s easy to teach, I adore Susan Wise Bauer’s philosophies. But, my kids were not responding to it, it was a drudgery to them, and they were bored. So, after much research and even seeing the books in person, I decided to buy the BJU Press English 2 and 3. I am so excited about this purchase. We got the books today and I am itching to dig in tomorrow with the kids. I doubt they are as excited as I am.

We are doing a coop this year. So far, it is going pretty well. The biggest challenge is getting prepared to get there and driving the 25 minutes to coop. The kids enjoy interacting with other kids. They have art class, 50 states, a literature class, and science.

This is the year I teach Abigail to read. She is in kindergarten. She knows all her sounds, mixes up a couple, but almost got it. We are working on sight words. She is doing ok, but I need more concentrated time with her. She has no patience, so I get what I can when I can. She loves doing work though so that is good. 🙂

That’s it for now. I will hopefully update or share again soon. Just been so busy making changes around here.

  1. Hey!

I think you will like the structure of BJU. I used it for my oldest when she was in third. I like how BJU alternates lesson chapters with detailed writing instruction. I hope it works for you.
